It’s the dawn of a new era; a new generation known as millennials are coming into adulthood and I sit here going “where do I fit in?” I’m too young to be considered a gen-Xer and definitely too old to relate to a millennial.
I grew up with big hair, slouch socks, and backwards jean overalls. My parents listened to records, while I taped the top songs off the radio on to cassettes, and bought my first CD at HMV.
I built a fence with my grandpa from supplies purchased at Beaver Lumber; and made my Christmas list from the Sears Catalogue. I got my first cell phone when I was old enough to drive, have a job to pay for it, and never dreamed I’d be blogging from it 20 years later. Hell I didn’t even know the word “blog” back then.
I’ve seen the gaming world evolve from the Oreagon Trail to World of Warcraft. Nintendo and Mario to Xbox One and Assassins Creed. I loved racing to the nearest Blockbuster to make sure I got the new releases for Friday nights with my high school sweetheart. I remember “be kind rewind” and “no late fees.” Now the only advertising I watch are movie previews and terms like “resume play” and “start from the beginning” make my tv watching so much more convenient.
From catalogue shopping to online grocery purchases I find myself missing the past but embracing the future. I’m sad to see the iconic stores go but excited to build my online business further. I’m taking advantage of this new world and building my future with it.
